TYPE MATERIAL. — Rhizochilus radula : holotype BMNH 1967928, figured by Kaicher (1985: 4062) , Kosuge & Suzuki (1985: pl. 41, fig. 5) and Higo et al. (2001: 65, fig. G2382). — Coralliophila pyriformis : 2 syntypes OMNH-Mo 6498-6499 (6498 figured by Kira 1959; Kosuge & Suzuki 1985: pl. 41, fig. 6).

TYPE LOCALITY. — R. radula : China. — C. pyriformis : the 2 syntypes are labelled “Kii Province” ( Wakayama Prefecture , 6498) and “Tosa Province” (Kōchi Prefecture, 6499) .

DISTRIBUTION. — Indo-West Pacific. The Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, including eastern Arabia among corals ( Bosch et al. 1995). From central Japan (Izu Peninsula and southwards, 10-50 m on corals; Higo et al. 2001) to Philippines, Kermadec Islands and northeast New Zealand (3-29 m living on hermatypic corals; Brook 1999, Marshall & Oliverio in prep.) and Australia (Wilson 1994). From the Coral Sea, New Caledonia and Loyalty Islands, live in 16-30 m, empty shells down to 56 m.

REMARKS. — Molecular data (Oliverio & Mariottini unpublished) confirm its close relationship to C. violacea .
