Stenichnus (Stenichnus) saltuarius Kurbatov View in CoL

( Figs 41–43 View FIGURES 41–43 )

Stenichnus saltuarius Kurbatov, 1993: 591 View in CoL . Here placed in Stenichnus View in CoL s. str.

Material studied. CHINA, Heilongjiang Province: 1 ♁, Quinyaun , 26.05.2004, leg. J. Cooter ( MHNG) [see Remarks below] .

Distribution. Russia: Primorsky Krai; China: Heilongjiang.

Remarks. This specimen was found with a label “ China, Qing Yuan, 25.vi.2004, J. Cooter lgt.” According to Jonathan Cooter (email to the author dated 31.05.2023), these data correspond to only a small part of information given in the original vial label, partly are incorrect, and the precise collecting site is impossible to infer. The locality is not Qingyuan (which is a city in Guangdong Province), but Quinyaun (in Heilongjiang Province), a roadside location, where beetles were collected not on 25.05, but on 26.05, on two separate sites: (1) along east side of river between distance post km 30 and km 29, 500–600 m, N46º 47.002' E129º 04.349', in river gravels, debris etc.; (2) along west side of river near km post 29, 600 m, N47º 470’ E129º 03.823’, in woodland, from dead timber, forest litter etc. As most species of Stenichnus inhabit rather forested areas, the latter collecting site seems more probable.

Stenichnus saltuarius was known to occur in the Russian Far East (Primorsky Krai), so the new locality in eastern China less than 300 km NW of Primorie is not surprising. The Chinese specimen was compared to the holotype of S. saltuarius (deposited at MHNG), and no differences were found. The aedeagus of this species ( Figs 42, 43 View FIGURES 41–43 ) is conspicuous and not possible to confuse with copulatory organs of any other species of Stenichnus . This is a small-bodied species (body length of adult beetles 1.15–1.25 mm), externally somewhat resembling S. bicolor , but easy to identify by the male genitalia.
