Remarks. Phylogenetically, this is a more well-defined family than the Leptocheliidae but further work is needed to refine it ( Bird & Larsen 2009) with respect to the two subfamilies Bathytanaidinae Larsen & Heard, 2001 and Paratanaidinae , and the genus Metatanais Shiino, 1952 (although see below). It is well represented in the Australasian region ( Bamber 2008) and includes Bathytanais Beddard , Pseudobathytanais Kudinova-Pasternak , Paratanais Dana, 1852 , and Xeplenois Bamber, 2005 .
