Discussion. Bałuk (1997) introduced the new name Narona (Aneurystoma) austropolonica for the specimen illustrated as figs 9a–b in Hörnes (1854, pl. 34). Unfortunately, Bałuk (1997) overlooked that Sacco (1894) had already proposed the name afenestrata for this very specimen. Later, Bałuk (2006) followed Petit and Harasewych (2005) and rejected austropolonica as junior synonym.
The separation of Aneurystoma afenestrata from the Burdigalian–Langhian A. dufourii ( Grateloup, 1832) is based on the completely different sculpture, which consists of prominent primary and secondary spiral ribs, which are incised by much weaker, sigmoidal growth lines. In contrast, A. dufourii develops a cancellate pattern of narrow axial ribs and spiral cords of equal strength (cf. Cahuzac et al. 2004). Aneurystoma afenestrata differs from the superficially similar Perplicaria mioquadrata ( Sacco, 1894) in its distinctly less elongate shell and the lower and much wider aperture. Moreover, its high protoconch with its large nucleus differs completely from the trochiform multispiral protoconch of Perplicaria mioquadrata .
Distribution. This rare species appears during the late Early Miocene in the Paratethys and is spread during the early Middle Miocene from the North Alpine Foreland Basin to the Polish–Carpathian Foredeep. It disappears already with the end of the early Badenian (= Langhian).
Paratethys —Karpatian (= Late Burdigalian): Korneuburg Basin ( Austria: Kleinebersdorf, Weinsteig); Badenian: Polish–Carpathian Foredeep ( Poland, Korytnica), North Alpine Foreland Basin ( Austria: Grund).
