Illustrated material. Figs 3A, 4A 1–A 3: specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1854, pl. 34, figs 19a–b), Baden ( Austria), height: 16.2 mm, width: 10.0 mm, NHMW 2009z0098/0016.

Discussion. See Landau et al. (2006) for a detailed description. The specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1854) has a rather homogenous sculpture whilst most other specimens in the collection of the NHM tend to develop a more pronounced sculpture, with tiny spines at the intersections of the axial ribs and spiral cords. These agree fully with Pliocene representatives of that species as illustrated by Chirli (2002) and Landau et al. (2006). Similarly, the protoconch with the depressed initial part is identical to that of the Pliocene specimen illustrated in Landau et al. (2006). The angulated whorls and the densely spaced spiral threads on the sutural ramp allow a separation from Admetula serrata ( Bronn, 1831) . A strongly sculptured specimen from Romania was erroneously identified as Sveltia taurinia ( Bellardi, 1841) by Moisescu (1955). Sveltia taurinia is an Early Miocene Italian species, which clearly differs from the Romanian Middle Miocene shell in its slender shell and incised sutures.

Distribution. This species is widespread during the Badenian in the Paratethys Sea and occurs also along the coasts of the North East Atlantic at that time. During the Late Miocene it is recorded from the Proto –Mediterranean Sea, where it persists up to the Piacenzian ( Landau et al., 2006). The record from the Early Miocene of the North Alpine Foreland Basin in Hölzl (1973) is dubious.

Paratethys —Badenian: Vienna Basin ( Czech Republic: Hrušovany; Austria: Niederleis, Steinebrunn, Bad Vöslau, Baden, Baden–Sooss, Möllersdorf); Eisenstadt–Sopron Basin ( Austria: Forchtenau, Walbersdorf; Hungary: Sopron); Mecsek Mountains and Pannonian Basin ( Hungary: Letkés, Bóta); Transylvanian Basin ( Romania: Lăpugiu de Sus); Dacian Basin ( Bulgaria: Urovene). North East Atlantic —Middle Miocene: Aquitaine Basin ( France). Proto –Mediterranean Sea —Late Miocene: Italy (Montegibbio); Early Pliocene: Italy, Spain; Piacenzian: Italy.
