Discussion. Sveltia lyrata ( Brocchi, 1814) is quite a common species in deeper water settings, displaying a wide variability in sculpture. Especially the spiral sculpture ranges from prominent to zero, resulting in the presence or absence of a weak row of spines close below the shoulder. Even the umbilicus ranges from nearly absent to distinct, bordered by a fasciole. A comparable variability is documented by Chirli (2002) for Pliocene specimens from Italy. Therefore, a specific separation of the Middle Miocene from the Pliocene shells seems to be unjustified. Consequently, the variety names badensis and vindobonensis , proposed by Sacco (1894), are considered synonyms. Moreover, Cancellaria vindobonensis Sacco, 1894 is a junior primary homonym of Cancellaria vindobonensis Hilber, 1892 .

This species is supposed to be still present along the coast of western Africa ( Verhecken 2007). The extant shells are more slender and develop a conspicuous spiral sculpture with primary and secondary ribs covering the entire shell. Another typical feature is the spinate angulation on the aperture. In our opinion, the extant representatives could belong to a tropical Atlantic offshoot of Sveltia lyrata .

Distribution. Landau et al. (2006) gave an extensive summary of the distribution of that species with numerous references. According to their synopsis, this widespread species appears already during the Early Miocene in the North Sea Basin and the Proto –Mediterranean Sea and becomes ubiquitous in the Middle Miocene, documented from the North Sea, the North East Atlantic, the Proto –Mediterranean and the Paratethys. Afterwards it seems to be limited to the Proto –Mediterranean, where it finally disappears during the Middle Pliocene.

Paratethys —?Ottnangian: North Alpine Foreland Basin (Bavaria: Kaltenbachgraben); Badenian: North Alpine Foreland Basin ( Austria: Grund); Vienna Basin ( Czech Republic: Hrušovany; Austria: Gainfarn, Grinzing, Bad Vöslau, Baden–Sooss, Baden, Möllersdorf, Traiskirchen); Eisenstadt–Sopron Basin ( Austria: Forchtenau; Hungary: Sopron); Bükk and Mecsek Mountains and Pannonian Basin ( Hungary: Devecser, Borsod, Szob, Balaton); Transylvanian Basin ( Romania: Lăpugiu de Sus, CoŞteiu de Sus); Dacian Basin ( Bulgaria: Staropatica). North Sea —Early Miocene ( Belgium: Antwerp); Middle Miocene ( Germany, Denmark, Netherlands). North East Atlantic —Middle Miocene ( France: Aquitaine Basin). Proto –Mediterranean Sea —Early Miocene ( Italy: Colli Torinesi, Baldissero, Sciolze); Late Miocene ( Italy: Montegibbio; Spain); Early Pliocene ( Italy, Spain, France); Middle Pliocene ( Italy); maybe also in the Pliocene Mediterranean Sea and Recent (western Africa).
