Discussion. This species is characterised by its scalate spire, the incised canaliculate suture and sculpture. This comprises very broad and raised spiral cords, which form high and thin ledges between the even broader axial ribs. The rectangular interspaces between the spiral and axial ribs are extraordinarily deep and lack any secondary sculpture elements.

Cahuzac et al. (2009) emphasize the similarities between Scalptia neugeboreni and the Burdigalian Scalptia burdigalensis ( Peyrot, 1928) from France, indirectly suggesting a placement of this species in Scalptia . The overall shape, the presence of three columellar folds, the parietal denticle and the moderately wide umbilicus support this allocation. This similarity with S. burdigalensis is only superficial as S. burdigalensis differs considerably in its bulbous shell, short spire and distinctly less scalate whorls. Moreover, secondary spiral ribs appear in the interspaces between the prominent primary cords, whereas S. neugeboreni lacks any secondary threads. This absence of secondary spiral sculpture, the much wider umbilicus and the higher spire distinguish S. neugeboreni also clearly from the superficially similar S. polonica (Pusch, 1837) .

Distribution. A very rare species which is only known from the Badenian of the Paratethys.

Paratethys —Badenian: Vienna Basin ( Czech Republic: Mikulov; Austria: Steinebrunn); Transylvanian Basin ( Romania: Lăpugiu de Sus).
