Description: This moderately slender shell has a high gradate spire with scalate and strongly angulated spire whorls. Its multispiral protoconch has a characteristic turbiniform outline, starting with less than two weakly convex whorls of which the first is very low, followed by a broad convex second one. The sculpture is rather constant consisting of strongly raised, slightly prosocline axial ribs which are crossed by a regularly spaced pattern of sharp and raised spiral cords, rarely intercalated by secondary threads. These spiral cords are ledge-like and raised between the axial ribs, causing a very characteristic pattern of deep, rectangular pits. The columella bears two folds and the narrow umbilicus is distinct and deep.
Discussion. This species is reminiscent of Scalptia gradata (Hörnes, 1854) , which differs in its lower number of axial ribs, the slender shape and less convex last whorl. In S. gradata the ribs are blunt and varix-like whilst in S. scrobiculata the ribs are relatively narrower and rounded. Scalptia neugeboreni (Hörnes, 1856) is also reminiscent of S. scriobiculata but has a wide umbilicus, a much coarser spiral sculpture, and a much deeper canaliculate sutural ramp.
Judging from the descriptions, Cancellaria grossauensis Handmann, 1882 and Cancellaria trilineata Handmann, 1882 , from the Badenian of Gainfarn in Vienna, seem to be synonyms of S. scrobiculata . As the type material of Handmann (1882) is lost we treat both species as nomina dubia.
Distribution. This species is known so far only from the Paratethys, where it is restricted to the early and middle Badenian. Specimens referred to as Trigonostoma scrobiculata from the western Proto –Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic might rather represent Scalptia exscrobiculata Sacco, 1894 , which is based on a Tortonian specimen from the Cacela Basin in Portugal (Pereira da Costa 1867).
Paratethys —Badenian: Polish–Carpathian Foredeep ( Poland: Korytnica); North Alpine Foreland Basin ( Austria: Grund, Windpassing); Vienna Basin ( Czech Republic: Hrušovany; Austria: Niederleis, Steinebrunn, Gainfarn, Enzesfeld); Eisenstadt–Sopron Basin ( Austria: Forchtenau).
