Discussion. A very widepread species, which is quite variable concerning its spiny sculpture. Specimens from deeper marine settings tend to be more depressed and develop prominent, partly open spines along the shoulder. Comparable morphs, however, appear also in shallow water assemblages, where the robust morphs without spines predominate. Thus, a separation of the spiny morph as hirtissima , as proposed by Sacco (1894), is unjustified. The specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1854, pl. 35) as fig. 6 is an extreme morph with slightly worn surface and poorly developed shoulder. The well-preserved protoconch figured ( Fig. 3O) clearly illustrates a dome-shaped multispiral protoconch with a small nucleus.
This species was usually referred to as Cancellaria spinifera Grateloup, 1832 . Cahuzac et al. (2004), however, documented that C. spinosa Grateloup 1827 has priority.
Distribution. A widespread species, which appears throughout the Miocene in the North East Atlantic and the Proto –Mediterranean ( Bellardi 1841; Cahuzac et al. 2004; Pereira da Costa 1867; Davoli 1982; Landau et al. in prep.). During the Middle Miocene it spreads also into the Paratethys. Its last occurrence is known from the Early Pliocene of Italy ( D’Ancona 1872).
North East Atlantic —Burdigalian and Langhian (Aquitaine Basin, France); Late Miocene (Cacela Basin, Portugal). Paratethys —Badenian: Polish–Carpathian Foredeep ( Poland: Korytnica); North Alpine Foreland Basin ( Austria: Grund, Windpassing), Vienna Basin ( Czech Republic: Mikulov; Austria: Steinebrunn, Gainfarn, Enzesfeld, Bad Vöslau, Baden–Sooss, Baden); Eisenstadt–Sopron Basin ( Austria: Forchtenau); Styrian Basin ( Austria: Ritzing); Mecsek Mountains ( Hungary); Transylvanian Basin ( Romania: Lăpugiu de Sus, CoŞteiu de Sus). Proto – Mediterranean Sea –Burdigalian (Colli Torinesi, Italy); Late Serravallian–Early Tortonian (Karaman Basin, Turkey); Tortonian (Po Basin, Italy); Early Pliocene: (Central Mediterranean, Italy).
