Terrestrial herbs. Distribution in PILA 0–2100 m, cloud forest, low elevation oak forest. Global distribution: Costa Rica to Peru. Records: M. Grayum 10315 ( CR, MO) .
Based on morphological and molecular characters, Christenhusz (pers. comm.) states that M. macrotheca (Fée) A.R. Sm. & R.C. Moran is an endemic of Guadeloupe (French West Indies) and that this taxon should be considered under the name M. biseriale .
