Type. Japan. Holotype male ( ISNB).

Diagnosis. Length: 7.7 mm. Width: 3.8 mm. derm fuscous; disc of pronotum with median and lateral vitta of white scales, remainder of scales clavate, testaceous; metepisternum broad anteriorly becoming very narrow at posterior angle; scutellum moderate-sized, longer than broad, with testaceous scales; elytra with confused pattern of narrow, elongate, clavate, testaceous and white scales; metafemur with large tooth; pygidium with very long testaceous seta-like scales. Genitalia: spermatheca: ramus elongate, suberect, truncate apically; collum broad basely, thickly tapering to rounded apex with a rounded bump; cornu rather thick at arc to subpointed apex that extends beyond apex of collum (Fig. 20). Plant Associations. Quercus spp. (Morimoto 1981) ; Populus davidiana Dode (IZAS).

Distribution. Japan: Kanagawa Prefect, Yokosuka; China: Beijing Province, Baihuashan, Hebei Province, Weichang; Russia: Primorie Territory, Gusevskii rudnik.

Remarks. This species has been confused with Curculio sikkimensis (Heller) the true Chestnut weevil in Japan, but differs in host preference, Quercus spp. over

Castanea spp. and morphological characters. Curculio sikkimensis has defined fascia on the elytra which C. dentipes lacks and appears not as robust as C. dentipes . The two species can also be separated by the male genitalia. Curculio hilgendorfi (Harold) appears very similar to both C. dentipes and C. sikkimensis , but lacks the median and lateral vitta on the pronotal disc.
