Type:― SPAIN. Canary Islands: Tenerife [ “Teneriffae ”], A. Broussonet s.n. (second-step lectotype B-W_20117-02 0_1!, designated here).
Notes:―The species Oeosporangium pulchellum (Bory ex Willd.) Fraser-Jenk. & Pariyar (2016: 264) is mainly a Macaronesian endemic diploid species, inhabiting the Madeira and Canary archipelagos (Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro islands), with just one specimen collected in continental Spain, in Cádiz (Pérez Carro et al., 1985). It grows in rock crevices of xeric environments, and it is characterised by tripinnate laminae with bipinnate basal pinnae, and last segment linear and glabrous abaxially.
In the protologue of Cheilanthes pulchella Bory ex Willd., Willdenow (1810: 456) mentioned that the plants on which his description was based were from “Teneriffae ”. Saenz de Rivas & Rivas-Martínez (1979) listed the same information of the protologue as “ type ” also mentioning the herbarium (“Herb. Willd., B ”) constituting a first step to lectotypification ( Turland et al. 2018, Art. 9.17).
After a search in herbarium Willdenow ( B), we found two specimens of Cheilanthes pulchella instead of a single specimen, both original material, one of Bory de Saint Vicent (number 30, barcode B-W_20117-020_1, image at http://herbarium.bgbm.org/object/BW20117010) and another of Broussonet (s.n., barcode B-W_20117-020_1, image at http://herbarium.bgbm.org/object/BW20117020). In order to avoid any ambiguity regarding the application of the name, we selected the specimen Broussonet s.n. (barcode B-W_20117-020_1!), as lectotype because the specimen is more complete, with a plant with all parts (even though Bory’s specimen has Bory’s handwritten information describing the plant that Willdenow used to characterize the species, the sheet just has one incomplete frond) and it corresponds with all characters used to describe the variety, and also has Willdenow’s handwritten annotation “ Ch. pulchella ” and “ W. ”. The specimen of Bory de Saint Vicent (number 30, barcode B _- W _20117 -01 0__1) is regarded as a syntype in accordance to Art. 9.12 of the Code ( Turland et al. 2018).
