Diagnosis. Diplommatina auriculata is characterized by a medium-sized shell with distinct extensions of the peristome, a prominent columellar lamella and close-set ribs.
Shell ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 3 , 5 View FIGURES 4 – 8 , 41–44 View FIGURES 41 – 42 View FIGURES 43 – 44 ; Table 1). Dextral; spindle shaped with conical early whorls and a narrowed last whorl; with 6.5–8 whorls separated by a deep suture; protoconch smooth; teleoconch with oblique ribs (28–92 on the penultimate whorl); with or without discernible spiral striae between the ribs; corneous; subtranslucent; last whorl rounded, with a ventral constriction; aperture subangular, angular at the transition from columellar to basal side; upper insertion of the peristome distinctly ascending towards aperture; insertions of the peristome connected by a distinct callus; peristome distinctly expanded, partly with 1–4 blunt processes, thickened, doubled; aperture with a prominent columellar lamella; with a parietal lamella ventrolaterally left inside the last whorl, sometimes with two parietal lamellae in one line, separated by a gap; with a short spiral palatal fold in the middle of the whorl ventrolaterally left inside the last whorl, sometimes with an additional very short spiral fold close to the suture; with a radial palatal fold ventrally; umbilicus closed; operculum thin, corneous, circular, paucispiral. Shell height 2.9–4.45 mm, shell diameter 1.45–2.2 mm.
Remarks. Diplommatina auriculata differs from D. canaliculata in the less slender spire and the close-set ribs (28–92 on the penultimate whorl versus 25–33 in D. canaliculata ).
Diplommatina auriculata is very variable in shell size and rib density. Already Möllendorff (1897) described several varieties. A principal component analysis based on the five shell measurements shown in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 as well as whorl and rib counts of 115 specimens ( Fig. 45 View FIGURE 45 ) showed a broad overlap between specimens from different regions, although a vague differentiation between populations from western and eastern Java can be recognized.
There are sinistral specimens from the Botanical Garden near Cibodas ( ZMA 55000a) and Kandang Badak between Mt . Pangrango and Mt. Gede ( ZMA 68398).
Habitat. In leaf litter, on deadwood, on rocks and stones. The species can be found in shrubs, agroforest, plantations, in primary and secondary forests on calcareous and volcanic soils at 0–3000 m a.s.l.
