Diagnosis. Diplommatina javana is characterized by a closely ribbed, small (shell height 2.65–3.2 mm), sinistral shell with a convex last whorl without a spiral depression, a slightly expanded peristome and with a spiral palatal fold close to the suture ventrolaterally right inside the last whorl.

Shell ( Figs 4 View FIGURES 4 – 8 , 24 View FIGURES 23 – 25 ; Table 1). Sinistral; ovoid with conical early whorls and a narrowed last whorl; with 5 whorls separated by a deep suture; protoconch smooth; teleoconch with oblique ribs (58–80 ribs on the penultimate whorl; approximately the same number on the last whorl); locally with spiral striae between the ribs; corneous; subtranslucent; last whorl rounded, with an indistinct ventral constriction; aperture subangular, angular at the transition from columellar to basal side; upper insertion of the peristome distinctly ascending towards aperture; insertions of the peristome connected by a weak callus; peristome expanded, thickened, doubled only towards the columella; aperture with a distinct columellar lamella; with a short spiral palatal fold close to the suture ventrolaterally right inside the last whorl and with a radial palatal fold ventrally close to the suture; umbilicus closed; operculum thin, corneous, ovoid, with an arcuate ridge on the inner surface, paucispiral. Shell height 2.65– 3.2 mm, shell diameter 1.55–2.0 mm.

Remarks. Rensch (1931) compared samples of D. javana from Bali and Flores with a sample from Mt. Cikuray, which he considered to represent the nominotypical subspecies of D. javana . Because the specimens from Mt. Cikuray had 28–34 ribs on the penultimate whorl, whereas the specimens from Bali and Flores had 65–75 ribs, Rensch (1931) separated the latter as D. javana orientalis Rensch, 1931 . Actually, the sample from Mt. Cikuray did not represent D. javana , but Diplommatina kakenca n. sp., whereas the samples from Bali and Flores do not differ from the true D. javana (see also Vermeulen & Whitten 1998).

Habitat. In leaf litter and on deadwood in primary and secondary forests on volcanic soils at 500–2700 m a.s.l.

Type material. Indonesia, Java (lectotype of D. javana [designated by Zilch 1953] SMF 105202; paralectotypes of D. javana SMF 105203/4).
