Diagnosis. Palaina nubigena is characterized by an ovoid, closely ribbed, sinistral shell and an operculum with an indistinct spiral ridge on the outer surface.
Shell ( Figs 7 View FIGURES 4 – 8 , 47 View FIGURES 46 – 48 ; Table 2). Sinistral; ovoid with conical early whorls; with 5–5.5 whorls separated by a deep suture; protoconch smooth; teleoconch with oblique ribs (80–104 on the penultimate whorl; fewer on the last whorl); with indistinct spiral striae between the ribs; whitish; subtranslucent; last whorl rounded, without distinct constriction or protrusion; aperture almost circular; upper insertion of the peristome slightly ascending towards aperture; insertions of the peristome connected by a distinct callus; peristome hardly expanded, slightly thickened, doubled at the columellar margin; without lamellae or folds; rimate or umbilicus closed; operculum thin, corneous, circular, multispiral, with an indistinct spiral ridge on the outer surface. Shell height 2.55–3.0 mm, shell diameter 1.5–2.0 mm.
Habitat. In leaf litter in forests on volcanic soils at 2300–2800 m a.s.l.
Type material. Indonesia, Java, West Java: Cikuray (= Tjikorai), 7°19'S 107°52'E (lectotype of P. nubigena [designated by Zilch 1953] SMF 105095; paralectotypes of P. nubigena SMF 105096/10).

Gede (SMF 105099/2); Cianjur, Mt. Gede, 2300–2500 m a.s.l., 6°46'S 106°59'E (SMF 105098/8, voucher to Zilch 1953); Cianjur, Mt. Gede, 2800 m a.s.l., 6°48'S 106°59'E (van Benthem Jutting 1948); Garut, top of Mt. Cikuray (= Tjikorai), 2600 m a.s.l., 7°19'S 107°52'E (SMF 105097/4, vouchers to Zilch 1953).
Distribution ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 15 – 19 ). Palaina nubigena is endemic to West Java, where it has been found so far in the Mt. Gede - Mt. Pangrango range and on Mt. Cikuray.
