Taxonomic history. Uchida (1940a) synonymised Plectocryptus hokkaidensis Uchida, 1930c under Cryptus penetrator and transferred the species to Chasmocryptus Uchida, 1936 ; then, Townes (1957) synonymised Chasmocryptus with Polytribax Förster, 1869 .

Smith (1878) also described ‘ Cryptus penetrator ’ from New Zealand: it is a primary homonym of Smith’s (1874) species and a replacement name, Cryptus geiri Dalla Torre, 1902 (= Aucklandella geiri ), was proposed for ‘ penetrator’ Smith, 1878.

Current taxonomy. Polytribax penetrator ( Smith, 1874) ( Ichneumonidae : Cryptinae : Aptesini ).

Type status. Holotype.

Sex. Female.

Type locality. Hyôgo Prefecture, Honshû, Japan.

Label data. First label, ‘ Type /CM’ (round label, with red margin; first line printed and second line handwriting); second label, ‘B.M. TYPE /HYM./3b.361’ (square label; first and second lines printed and third line handwriting); third label, ‘Hiogo/ Japan.’ (square label; first line handwriting and second line printed); fourth label, ‘ Cryptus /penetrator/ Type Smith’ (square label; handwriting).

Condition. Good, but right antenna, left antenna after 27th flagellomere, fifth tarsomere of right fore leg, fourth and fifth tarsomeres of left mid leg, fifth tarsomere of right hind leg, second to fifth tarsomeres of left hind leg lost.
