Type-genus: Hoplandria Kraatz, 1857 ; by designation of Casey (1910).

Diagnosis: In addition to the characters of the tribe, this subtribe is characterized by 4-5-5 tarsal formula in most taxa, 4-4- 4 in a few species; long to very long ligula, with length to width ratio greater than 1.5. Each mandible with large, dorsal ‘velvety patch’ present at the base. Each antenna with coeloconical sensilla within apical segment, typically two in more or less parallel positions. Broadly separated mesocoxae. Diverse array of secondary sexual characters in males of most species, including carina on humeral area of elytra, denticle or carina on medioapical region of each elytron, denticle on outer apical third of each elytron, posterior corner of abdominal sterna III and IV produced as spine or lobe, and posteriomedian longitudinal carina on abdominal tergum VII.

Comments: This subtribe consists of three genera, Hoplandria , Leptandria and Heliconandria , and 102 described species primarily distributed throughout the New World, with three from the Oriental, and two from the Palaearctic regions. Based on examination of many Hoplandria species from these regions, it appears that Hoplandria is restricted to the New World with species described as Hoplandria from other regions likely representing other groups, most notably Pseudoplandria and the tribes Athetini and Oxypodini .
