Type Locality: Zimmermann (1783) based the name on the "Falkland Isle Seal" of Pennant (1781), and added that it "Wohnt um Juan Fernandez, und über haupt in dortigen Meeren." [Falkland Isls, UK].
Vernacular Names: South American Fur Seal.

Distribution: South America coasts of Argentina, Brazil (from Recife dos Tôrres south), Chile, Falkland Isls, Peru (from Isla Lobos de Tierra south), Uruguay.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Scheffer (1958) included galapagoensis Heller, 1904 , but this was not followed by Repenning et al. (1971) or King (1983). Synonyms allocated according to Cabrera (1957) and Rice (1998).
