Type species: Atkinsoniella decisa Distant, 1908 (by original designation).

Diagnosis. Head with anterior margin varying from rounded to broadly rounded; without carina at transition from crown to face; ocelli located on or behind imaginary line between anterior eye angles; frontogenal suture extending onto crown or not; frons convex or flattened medially, epistomal suture distinct or obscure medially. Pronotal width varying interspecifically compared to head width, lateral margin convergent anteriorly and posterior margin shallowly concave medially, disk with or without sculpturing; mesonotum with scutellum usually convex, scutellum with or without sculpture. Forewing usually with four apical cells, base of second cell more proximal than base of third, or aligned transversely. Hindleg with femoral setal formula 2:1:1 or 2:1:1:1. Male pygofer produced posteriorly, posterior margin broadly convex, or narrowed, or truncate, with long or short macrosetae on median or posterior portion; pygofer process extending posterodorsally as far as or farther than pygofer apex. Subgenital plate broad, usually dorsally curved along apical half, with uniseriate or multiseriate macrosetae and microsetae on ventral surface. Aedeagus usually with broad base articulating with paraphyses, extending posterodorsad. Paraphyses articulating basally with connective, curved abruptly dorsad apically and usually with second articulation for aedeagus. Connective broad, extending posteriorly at least as far as midlength of style but not extending to style apex. Style without preapical lobe. Female abdominal sternite VII usually slightly produced, usually with posterior margin slightly concave and forming lobes; lateral margins parallel or convergent posteriorly. Pygofer with posterior rounded or subacute apically; surface with macrosetae on posterior portion and ventral margin. Second valvulae usually variable interspecifically, apex varying from acute to rounded, with few teeth on dorsal margin, each with numerous denticles.
