TYPE LOCALITY: "Batang â Tatsien-Lou", restricted by Pousargues (1898:358) to "environ de Tongolo et de Ta-tsien-lou" [ China, Sichuan] .
DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to the dry steppe from the eastern flanks of the Tibetan plateau in C China north to Nei Monggol; perhaps to Mongolia.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix II.
SYNONYMS: chutuchta Birula, 1917; pallida Büchner, 1893 ; subpallida Jacobi, 1922; vellerosa Pocock, 1943.
COMMENTS: Haltenorth (1953) suggested chutuchta and vellerosa belonged in sylvestris .
