Dendrogale murina (Schlegel and Müller 1843) View in CoL

[Tupaia] murina Schlegel and Müller 1843 , in: Temminck, Verh. Nat. Gesch. Nederland. Overz. Bezitt., Zool.: 167 [1845], pls. 26, 27 [1843].

Type Locality: Given as "Pontianak" (Kalimantan, Borneo); with little doubt actually collected by Diard at Cochin Chine, Vietnam (C. Smeenk, in litt.).

Vernacular Names: Northern Smooth-Tailed Treeshrew.

Synonyms: Dendrogale frenata (Gray 1860) .

Distribution: From E Thailand (Chatraburi and Trat Provinces) through Cambodia to S Vietnam.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Lyon (1913) and Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951) discussed the doubtful validity of the original type locality. Archival research at the Naturalis Museum, Leiden corroborates a Vietnamese origin for the holotype of murina (see type locality above).
