Hemiepiphyte. Stem climber. Prophylls green to yellowish, entire, persistent. Petiole 57.5 cm long, green with dark green stripes, without extrafloral nectaries, cylindrical to slightly flattened abaxially, geniculum absent. Leaf-blade 29.2 × 24.5 cm, green, discolorous, with light-yellowish margins, perpendicular to the petiole, chartaceous, ovate, with a flat surface, apex acuminate, base cordate, lobes 9.0 × 9.4 cm long, absence of glandular dots. Midrib green, concolorous, without vinaceous extrafloral nectaries, flattened adaxially, prominent abaxially, primary lateral veins engraved adaxially, prominent abaxially, 3–5 on both sides, basal vein absent, collective vein absent, secondary and tertiary veins parallel-pinnate. Inflorescence 1 per leaf axil. Peduncle 8.0 cm long, green, terete. Spathe 13.5 × 5.5 cm, externally green to white, internally white with lighter dots, without vinaceous shading, strongly constrict in the middle region. Spadix 11–16 cm long, heterogeneous, unisexual flowers, with sterile staminate flowers at the apex. Apical sterile male section 1.3 cm long, white to light green. Staminate fertile section 2.9 cm long, light green. Basal sterile staminate section 3.5 cm long, white. Pistillate section 9.0 cm long, green. Berries green to brown.
Distribution: — Philodendron appendiculatum is endemic to Brazil, occurring in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo ( Flora do Brasil 2020). It was found at the Matipó trail (northern PESB).
Ecology and phenology: —Usually found in humid and shaded forest sites, at elevations higher than 1100 m, with flowering and fruiting from October to March (Coelho 2000, Sakuragui et al. 2011). In the PESB, one individual was found with a rot inflorescence in July.
Taxonomic notes: —Differs from other Philodendron species found in the PESB by its sterile staminate flowers at the apex of the spadix.
