Pl. 8, fig. D
Gray [in Dieffenbach], 1843b. Catalogue of the species of Mollusca. In: Travels in New Zealand, Volume 2: 262.
Type material: Holotype, by monotypy, NHMUK 1842.11 About NHMUK .4.51 (dry shell material).
Label details: ‘ New Zealand, Dr A. Sinclair’.
Type locality: ‘New Zealand’ (Gray [in Dieffenbach] 1843b: 262).
Previous illustrations of type material: Smith (1874: pl. 1, fig. 2) .
Remarks: The original description of Nanina mariae , which was reproduced by Gray (1844: 454), was based on a single specimen (see Gray 1850: 164), obtained by Dr. Andrew Sinclair on a trip to New Zealand in 1841–1842 (see Introduction for itinerary). There are no locality details for this specimen other than ‘New Zealand’ listed by Gray in Dieffenbach (1843b) and the NHMUK accessions register for Mollusca. This species has a distribution extending throughout much of the North Island (below). The holotype, which has a maximum shell diameter of 6.0 mm, is of similar size and shape to shells from the Auckland region, and larger than shells from the southern North Island (see Cumber 1967a). This suggests that the type material was probably collected in the vicinity of Auckland. Senior synonym of Helix conella Pfeiffer, 1861 (see entry for conella above), and Helix umbraculum Pfeiffer, 1854 (see entry for umbraculum below).
Current Taxonomy: Listed as Laoma mariae (Gray, 1843) by Suter (1913b: 740), Spencer & Willan (1995: 41) and Spencer et al. (2009: 217).
Distribution: New Zealand; North Island, Auckland to Wellington ( Suter 1913b; Cumber 1967a; Powell 1979).
