Daudebardia novoseelandica Pfeiffer, 1861

Pfeiffer, 1861. Malakozoologische Blätter, 8: 146.

Type material: Listed by Suter (1913b: 787) as being in the ‘ K.K. Hofmuseum, Vienna’, but not found during a search of the collections in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in 2014 (Anita Eschner pers. comm.). As noted in the Introduction (above), the type material may have gone to the Pommersches Museum, Stettin [= Szczecin], after Pfeiffer’s death in 1877, in which case it has probably been lost or destroyed .

Type locality: ‘Urwäldern der mittleren Waikatogegend’ ( Pfeiffer 1861: 146); Kakepuku, Waikato ( Hochstetter 1867: 318).

Remarks: There are no published illustrations of type material. The original description was based on one or more shells collected by Ferdinand von Hochstetter in 1859, in a forest remnant on the upper southwestern slopes of Mount Kakepuku, a volcanic cone southwest of Te Awamutu ( Hochstetter 1867: 317–318; Hedley 1893: 387). A search of the collection of the Naturhistorisches Museum, Wien in 2014 did not find any specimen lots with locality details matching those of Pfeiffer (1861) or Hochstetter (1867), but there was one lot of shells, eggs and preserved tissue of ‘ Schizoglossa novoseelandica Pfr. ’ from ‘inland of Mt. Egmont, North Island’ (NHMW 24453), which was listed in the catalogue as type material. However, these specimens were evidently sent to the K.K. Hofmuseum in exchanges by Robert Murdoch (Oliver Paget pers. comm. in Parkinson 1974: 171, 1979: 8), and are not part of the type series. Daudebardia novoseelandica Pfeiffer, 1861 is the type species of Schizoglossa Hedley, 1893 , by original designation.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Schizoglossa novoseelandica ( Pfeiffer, 1861) by Hedley (1893: 391), Hedley & Suter (1893: 628), Suter (1894d: 288, 1913b: 785), Powell (1949: 367, 1979: 347), Climo (1977: 63), Parkinson (1979: 8) and Spencer et al. (2009: 218).

Distribution: New Zealand; central North Island ( Powell 1949, 1979; Parkinson 1979).
