Helix antipoda Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841
Pl. 2, fig. B
Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841. Annales des Sciences Naturelles. Zoologie, (2)16: 64.
Type material: Syntypes, MNHN-IM-2000-27776 (4), MNHN-IM-2000-27777 (2) (dry shell material).
Label details: ‘ Helix antipoda Hombr. Jacq., Iles Auckland, MM. Hombron et Jacquinot, 1841 ’; ‘ Helix antipoda Hombr. Jacq. , MM. Hombron et Jacquinot, 1841 ’.
Type locality: ‘îles Auchland’ ( Hombron & Jacquinot 1841: 64); ‘îles Auckland (Hombron & Jacquinot 1847 [in 1842–1854]: pl. 6, figs. 13–16; Rousseau 1854: 18).
Previous illustrations of type material: Hombron & Jacquinot (1847 [in 1842–1854]: pl. 6, figs. 13–16); Tryon (1886 [from Hombron & Jacquinot 1847]: pl. 63, figs. 65–67—as Charopa antipodarum ).
Remarks: The type material of Helix antipoda was collected at Auckland Islands in 1840, during a visit by Dumont D’Urville’s ‘South Pole’ expedition. Helix auklandica Le Guillou, 1842 , which was also based on material collected at Auckland Islands, was treated as a junior synonym of H. antipoda Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841 by Suter (1909a: 35, 1913b: 655) and Powell (1955: 123, 1979: 317). The original descriptions of H. antipoda and H. auklandica give identical shell dimensions, and were possibly based on the same type material, which was sent to MNHN in 1841 at the completion of the expedition (see Clark & Crosnier 2000: 419).
Current Taxonomy: Listed as Thalassohelix antipoda ( Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841) by Powell (1955: 123, 1979: 317) and Spencer et al. (2009: 216), but preliminary results of a phylogenetic study (M. Kennedy & F. Brook unpub. data) indicate that the placement in genus Thalassohelix Pilsbry, 1892 requires re-evaluation.
Distribution: Auckland Islands ( Suter 1909a, 1913b; Powell 1955, 1979).
