Notes:— Rhexia villosa has as its original material Aublet s.n. at BM and LINN ( Howard 1983), but no duplicate was indicated as the type (Aublet 1775). Comolia veronicaefolia was described from R.H. Schomburgk 326 and also without a duplicate indicated as the type ( Bentham 1840). However, Wurdack (1993) indicated the specimen at BM (BM000889608) as the holotype of C. villosa and the specimen at K (K000261627) as the holotype for C. veronicaefolia , which are inadvertent lectotypifications in both cases (see Article 7.11 of the ICN).

The original materials of Comolia hirtella and C. lythrarioides are M.R. Schomburgk 390 (housed at K and P) and A. Kappler 1420 (at MO, NY, P and S, and a negative of B at F), respectively. The two names were established by Naudin (1850a) without the indication of their types. However, Wurdack (1993) indicated the duplicates of the original materials at P as the holotype of each name. For C. hirtella the indication made by Wurdack (1993) is an inadvertent lectotypification (see Article 7.11 of the ICN). According to Articles 9.10 and 9.17 of the ICN, the indication of a specimen at P ( Figure 6A View FIGURE 6 ) as the holotype made by Wurdack (1993) for C. lythrarioides is a first-step lectotypification and herein we carried out the second-step lectotypification. In some duplicates (e.g., P00482349 [ Figure 6B View FIGURE 6 ], P00482350, P00482351, MO-313708, NY00221602, and S09-13070) of the original material of C. lythrarioides there is the nomen nudum “ Hostmannia lythrarioides Steud. ”.

Comolia surinamensis View in CoL presents duplicates of the original material in six different herbaria and did not have one of these duplicates indicated as a type ( Miquel 1851). Wurdack (1993) considered the specimen at U (U 0003998) as the holotype, which is an inadvertent lectotypification (see Article 7.11 of the ICN).

When describing Comolia lythrarioides var. major, Cogniaux (1885) View in CoL indicated Wullschlägel 174 as the material he analyzed. Three duplicates of this collection were found, two at BR and one at NY. Herein, one of the duplicates at BR (BR0000008930668) is designated as the lectotype because it is a well-preserved duplicate, according to Article 9.11 of the ICN. Another variety described by Cogniaux (1885), C. villosa var. glabrior , based on Spruce 3743, also needs to be typified, since this collection has duplicates deposited at BM (BM000778249), BR (BR0000008930903), K (K000530805), and TDC (TCD0005167). Thus, following Article 9.11 of the ICN, the duplicate at BR is designated as the lectotype. Also in Flora brasiliensis, Cogniaux (1885) described C. neglecta View in CoL based on Schomburgk 307B/392 (at K, G, and P). However, Wurdack (1993) considered the material deposited at K (K000261628) as the holotype, which is an inadvertent lectotypification (see Article 7.11 of the ICN).

Hoehne (1922) described two species of Comolia : C. affinis and C. kuhlmannii , based on A. Lisbôa 6 and J.G. Kuhlmann 498, respectively. For both names, Hoehne (1922) indicated in the protologue that the type would be housed at RB. During the search for the original material of C. affinis , three duplicates were found at RB (RB00541375, RB00662300, and RB00662404); while for C. kuhlmannii , two duplicates were housed at RB (RB00541378 and RB00556672). Thus, a lectotype must be chosen for each name (see Article 9.3 of the ICN). Thus, according to Article 9.11 of the ICN, we designated the lectotype to C. affinis . According to Articles 9.10 and 9.17 of the ICN, the indication made by Wurdack (1993) for C. kuhlmannii is a first-step lectotypification and herein we carried out the second-step lectotypification.
