Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei (Weath.) Johnson (1989: 55) View in CoL .
Type (lectotype, here designated):— USA. Florida: Okaloosa County, Rogue Creek, 26 April 1925, Ashe s.n. (NCU-00013159, image of the lectotype available at http://www.herbarium.unc.edu/types.htm).
Nomenclatural notes: ―The protologue of Magnolia ashei ( Weatherby 1926: 35–36) consists of a detailed diagnosis and comparison with the related M. macrophylla . Weatherby (l.c.) listed some specimens collected in Florida. Among them, he reported: “ FLORIDA, Okaloosa County: three 25 ft. high, or shrubby, Rogue Creek, April 26 and June 6, 1925, Ashe ( TYPE in herb. Ashe), two sheets” (specimens available at http://www.herbarium.unc.edu/types.htm, NCU, and https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/p/item/p00734812, P). According to Art. 40.1, despite the two gatherings, the name is validly published since it was published after 1958. The two specimens at NCU and P are syntypes (Art. 9.5). We here designate the specimen at NCU as the lectotype of the name Magnolia ashei because it is better preserved, matches the diagnosis and clearly corresponds to the current concept of this taxon ( Vázquez-García et al. 2015, 2016).
