Material examined. Brazil: Alagoas – “Akaroa”, st. 3, Porto de Pedras, 36 m, 1 spec. (DOUFPE-3671); Santa Catarina – Proj. REVIZEE, st. 6786, 1 spec. (MZUSP-13877).
Diagnosis. Shield slightly broader than long. Rostrum rounded, slightly exceeding lateral projections, which terminate in submarginal spine turned outwards. Antennular peduncles exceeding ocular peduncles by one-third to one-half length of terminal segment, this last dilated distally. Antennal acicles moderately short, strongly arcuate, terminating in small spine. Chelipeds unequal, right stronger than left, moderately spinose, palms with reticulated color pattern. Third pereopod with anterior lobe of sternite roundly rectangular, strongly skewed to left.
Distribution. Western Atlantic: Bahamas, United States (Florida), Antilles and Brazil (Alagoas, Santa Catarina).
Habitat. From shallow waters to 260 m; on calcareous algae.
Remarks. Based on the reticulated pattern of the chelipeds, Provenzano (1961) and Williams (1965) cited Spiropagurus dispar Stimpson, 1859 , and Saint Laurent-Dechancé (1966) cited Iridopagurus dispar , as the same species described by Stimpson (1859). However, García-Gómez (1983), in revising the genus Iridopagurus , examined the material studied by these authors and concluded that their specimens were different from those of Stimpson (1859). The material examined by Provenzano (1961) and identified as S. dispar was revised by Garcia-Gómez (1983), who recognized three different species, Iridopagurus caribbensis ( A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1893) , I. margaritensis Garcia-Gómez, 1983 and I. reticulatus Garcia-Gómez, 1983 . In the material of Williams (1965), Garcia-Gómez recognized two different species: I. caribbensis and I. reticulatus . The material of Saint Laurent- Dechancé (1966) was assignable I. reticulatus . The material collected in Brazil was identified as I. dispar sensu Saint Laurent-Dechancé (1966) (Dr. Petrônio A. Coelho, pers. com.). Thus, we concluded that the Brazilian material identified as I. dispar is assignable to Iridopagurus reticulatus .
