Type Locality: Mexico, Chiapas, Pinabete, 8,200 ft. (2,499 m).

Vernacular Names: Nelson's Spiny Pocket Mouse.

Distribution: Known only from S Chiapas ( Mexico) and W Guatemala.

Conservation: IUCN – Critically Endangered.

Discussion: Type species of subgenus Xylomys Merriam , which is of debatable validity ( R. P. Anderson, pers. comm.). Reviewed by Rogers and Rogers (1992 b, Mammalian Species No. 397).
