Holotype 3 ( Fig. 20–21 View FIGURES 13 – 24 ): Madagascar Est: Moramanga, Andasibe, vic. Anevoka, Foret Pluviale de Maromiza NR, mountain ridge in disturbed primary forest, 1100–1150 m, 18°58’12–18’’S, 48°27’18–54’’E, 25.XI.2004, attracted by artificial pheromones during late morning hours, J. Berg & D. Bartsch leg. ( SMNS).
Etymology. From ancient Greek xanthos (= yellow) and omos (= shoulder).
Description. Medium sized species with alar expanse 22 mm, forewing 10 mm, antenna 9 mm, body 13 mm. Head with labial palp yellow, palpomeres 2 and 3 dorsally black; frons greyish black with metallic sheen and white adjacent to the eye; vertex with rather short and smooth black scales, a yellow spot between antenna and ocellus; antenna black; pericephalic scales yellow. Thorax black with dark blue metallic gloss; patagia black; prothorax laterally and tegula yellow. Abdomen long and slender with long and narrow anal tuft; tergites 1–3 black, sparsely mottled with orange scales; tergite 4 and 5 orange-red, dorso-anteriorly a small black spot; tergites 6 and 7 dorsally completely black, laterally orange-red; sternites orange with golden shine; anal tuft long, predominantly black with narrow orange-red lateral stripe, ventrally orange-red, tip of scales whitish grey. Foreleg orange-yellow; other legs orange with coxa, femur and tibia latero-proximally glossy black; hindleg with tibia and first tarsomere entirely covered with rough, red hair-like scales. Forewing narrow with large transparent areas, longitudinal transparent area extending to discal spot, external transparent area large, six-partite; apical area very narrow; discal spot narrow, as well as veins, margins and costal area black. Hindwing with discal spot, veins and margins black. Fringes greyish black. Underside of both wings basally yellow, distal half of forewing discal spot mottled with yellow scales. Male genitalia ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 36 – 37 ) very similar to C. polytelis but valva more elongate and distally somewhat more pointed, about 3.5 times longer than broad; saccus apically slightly bilobed; phallus shorter than valva, with apical tooth (lost). The female is unknown.
Diagnosis. In size and coloration Camaegeria xanthomos resembles the more common C. polytelis , but is clearly differentiated by the following characters: anal vein of forewing basally black (in C. polytelis orange-red); tegula yellow (in C. polytelis orange-red); discal spot of forewing broader, entirely black (in C. polytelis distally orange-red); tergites 1−3 black (in C. polytelis only tergite 3 black); sternites and ventral side of anal tuft orangeyellow (in C. polytelis sternites 1−6 pale yellow, sternite 7 and anal tuft ventrally black). See also C. sylvestralis . The male genitalia differ from that of C. polytelis by the narrower valva and the bilobed, not rounded saccus.
