status

Salsola fuliginosa C.A.Sm. ex Ulbr. in Engl. & Prantl in Natürl. Pflanzenfam., ed. 2, 16c: 566 (1934), nom. nud. (Art. 38.1a of ICN).

Salsola fuliginosa C.A.Sm. , in schedis (Rogers 18342 BOL).

Notes: ―The name Salsola fuliginosa was coined by C.A. Smith to reclassify the voucher specimen by Rogers 18342 (erroneously identified either as S. tuberculata or S. foetida –see voucher BOL-128257!). Although this name had been listed by Ulbrich (1934: 566), it remained overlooked by V.P. Botschantzev in his two major papers ( Botschantzev 1974a, 1974d). This above-mentioned specimen was assigned as “type” of Salsola fuliginosa in the JSTOR depository of scanned types (http://plants.jstor.org; accessed on 26 October 2011). This deed, however, does not validate the name. This taxon is a member of the genus Caroxylon , however it remains still to be formally described. This will be done after new, fresh colelctions have bene studied.

Distribution: ―Namibia: Lüderitz Bay.
