50. Caroxylon kleinfonteineni (Botsch.) Mucina comb. nov.

Basionym:― Salsola kleinfonteini Botsch. in Botanicheskii Zhurnal 66(7): 1038 (1981).

Type:― SOUTH-WEST AFRICA [ NAMIBIA]. Helmeringshausen (2516 BB): Farm Kleinfontein MAL 81, auf grosser Lehfläche in kleinen Gruppen in der Senke, 8 January 1965, Giess 8312 (holotype M-0107422! ; isotypes K-000243995!, LE-00012144!, PRE-0531269-0!) .

Notes on Salsola kleinfonteini : ―The epithet “ kleinfonteini ” ( Salsola kleinfonteini Botsch. ) is not correctable (to become “ kleinfonteinensis ”, “ kleinfonteinense ” or “ kleinfonteinii ”) under the Code. Botschantzev used this spelling intentionally and correctly, even if against the common practice. According to Art. 23, Rec. 23A.1 of ICN (McNeill et al. 2012), names of persons and also of countries and localities used in specific epithets should take the form of nouns in the genitive or of adjectives. Thus, Botschantzev correctly used the epithet in the form of the noun in the genitive (Kleinfontein, hence kleinfonteini ), not as an adjective. The correction to ‘ Salsola kleinfonteinii ’ in IPNI (2017- onward) has been made erroneously; only eponymic (not toponymic!) epithets are correctable in that way (Art. 60, Ex. 33 & 34 of ICN: McNeill et al. 2012).
