52. Caroxylon littorale (Moq.) Akhani & E.H.Roalson in Int. J. Plant Sci. 168(6): 947 (2007), as “ littoralis ”.

Basionym:― Salsola littoralis Moq. View in CoL in DC. Prodr. 13, 2: 180 (1849).

Type (designated here):― MADAGASCAR: in arenosis maritimis ad oram austro-orientalem Madagascariae, Bojer s.n. (lectotype P-00487034! ; isolectotype P-00799069!) .

Sarcomorphis littoralis Bojer View in CoL , in schedis (G-DC).

Sarcomorphis littoralis Bojer ex Moq. View in CoL in Moq. in DC. Prodr. 13, 2: 180 (1849), nom. inval. (Art. 36.1c of ICN).

Notes: ―This taxon was described as Salsola littoralis by Moquin-Tandon (1849). In the description a reference to the name Sarcomorphis littoralis Bojer (‘in litt. et herb. DC.’) was made, yet it was apparently not accepted by Moquin-Tandon (l.c.). I have seen two voucher specimens from Madagascar (Côte NO, baie de St Augustin) designated as a ‘type’, namely P-00487034! and P-00799069!, however I have failed to locate the specimen mentioned by Moquin-Tandon (1849) which should be lodged in the Candolle’s collection at G.

Botschantzev (1972: 152) described Salsola littoralis var. glabra Botsch. in Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 9: 152 (1972), based on specimen by Bosser 9844 P! (assigned as holotype of the variety), the surrounds of ‘Morandava’ [Morondava], on the east coast of Madagascar (collected in September 1956). Since I failed to locate the specimen, its taxonomic position remains an open problem.

Distribution: ―Madagascar: southeastern coast.
