Worker ( Figs. 8 View FIGURES 8 F–G, 10D–E, 11, 12G–H). Head capsule rounded hemi-ellipsoid, with convex sides, narrowing posteriorly. Postclypeus conspicuously inflated. Relative length of antennal articles: 1> 6> 2 = 5> 3> 4, combined length of 3rd + 4th shorter than 6th. Cushions of enteric valve armature with narrow tip, which evert a little into P3; spines are mostly straight ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 H). Measurements in Table 3.

Comparisons. Compared to C. angulariceps and C. brevidens , the soldier of C. strictinasus is larger and has a more elongate head, and its nasus is not upturned. Their mandibles are also distinct, with a relatively short apical tooth and concave cutting edge between A and M1. The worker is, on average, larger than in the other species, and its enteric valve armature has cushions with narrow posterior tips, which advance a little into P3.

Remarks. This species occurs only in open vegetation, in the cerrado domain ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ). It is often found associated with nests of Cornitermes spp. Mathews's (1977: 226, Fig. 182a) illustration of the soldier mandible lacks detail and is not representative (probably based on an atypical specimen). The most common shapes of soldier mandibles are illustrated in Figs. 9 View FIGURES 9 E and 9F. The new synonymy is based on the observation of soldiers identifiable as C. cupim and C. strictinasus from the same colony, and all intermediate forms between them. Also, the imagos of C. cupim and C. strictinasus are identical ( Fontes 1985: 14).
