Zuphium Latreille, 1805: 198. Type species: Carabus olens Rossi, 1790 designated by Latreille (1810: 426). Etymology. Uncertain, possibly from the Greek zoyphion (small animal) or zophos (obscure, dark) [neuter].
Zophium Gistel, 1840: 112. Unjustified emendation of Zuphium Latreille, 1805.
Zoyphium Agassiz, 1846: 393. Unjustified emendation of Zuphium Latreille, 1805.
Diversity.
Worldwide, with about 75 species of which six are found in the temperate and subtropical areas of North America.
Identification.
Mateu (1981) reviewed the North American species and provided a key for their identification.
