Genus Stomoxys Geoffroy View in CoL
Stomoxys Geoffroy, 1762: 449 View in CoL , 538. Type-species: Conops calcitrans Linnaeus, 1758 , des. I.C.Z.N., Opinion 441 (1957).
Diagnosis. General colour brownish-grey to yellowish-brown; head slightly wider than high; vertex about one-fourth of head-width in male and over one-third in female; arista plumose on dorsal side; proboscis long and piercing, non-retractile; palpus slender and short; postpedicel about 2.5 times as long as pedicel; prosternum and proepisternum setulose; prealar seta absent; anterior katepisternal absent; vein M conspicuously curved forward towards vein R 4+ 5 in its apical section.
Comments. The genus is cosmopolitan, with 18 described species, two of them occurring in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions ( Pont, 1989). The Australian Stomoxyini were reviewed by Pont (1973a).
