Genus Limnophora Robineau-Desvoidy View in CoL View at ENA
Limnophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830: 517 View in CoL . Type-species: Limnophora palustris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 View in CoL [= Anthomyia maculosa Meigen, 1926 ], des. Coquillett (1910: 561).
Diagnosis. Eye usually bare; prestomal teeth developed; prealar seta absent; lower proepimeral seta upcurved; prosternum with lateral setulae; postsutural dorsocentral setae 3 or 4; vein M slightly curved forwards just before apex; wing with setulae at the base of vein R 4+5 on dorsal and ventral surfaces; sternite 1 bare; female ovipositor with segment 8 directed upwards and with small spicules; hypoproct elongated and with spinules.
Comments. The genus is widely distributed in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions, with most of the species being endemic to the various South Pacific Ocean islands. Only L. mesolissa Bezzi is widespread in distribution through the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. Both L. mesolissa and L. caledonica Shinonaga, Kano & Fauran , a recently described endemic species, are recorded from New Caledonia. Shinonaga (2005) reviewed the Limnophora from New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and described 87 species new to science (all listed in the online version of the Australasian/Oceanian Diptera Catalog, last reviewed in May 2007, http:// hbs.bishopmuseum.org/aocat/muscidae.html).
