Therioplectes tunicatus (Szilády, 1927)
status

Therioplectes tunicatus (Szilády, 1927) View in CoL

The genus Therioplectes includes notably large (20 mm in length), densely haired species ( Moucha & Chvála 1964). Legs are stout and heavily pubescent, with all tibiae remarkably thickened, they have similar bumble-bees appearance ( Moucha & Chvála 1964). All species of the current genus are separated by pubescence coloration on face, thorax, and abdomen ( Chvála et al. 1972).

Therioplectes tunicatus View in CoL has pale pubescence on frons, face and palpi, whereas thorax and abdomen yellowish-gray pubescent, it is closely related to Therioplectes gigas (Herbst 1787) View in CoL that has black haired face, cheeks, and abdomen ( Chvála et al. 1972). Theodor (1965) synonymized gigas View in CoL under tunicatus View in CoL . However, Zeegers (2005) considered Th. gigas View in CoL and Th. tunicatus View in CoL different species. Therioplectes tunicatus View in CoL is a Palearctic species. It is distributed from Italy through northern Mediterranean countries to Turkey and Transcascusus ( Kılıç 1999). In the Middle East region, it was recorded from Jordan, Palestine, and Syria.
