Eupolyphaga nigrinotum sp. nov.

( Figs. 8 View FIGURE 8 I–L; 15 A–C; 33 A–D; 38 K, S; 44 A–G)

Type material. Holotype: CHINA: Yunnan: male (SWU), Mt. Jizushan [鸡足山], Binchuan County [宾川县], Dali Prefecture [大 理州], 2500 m, 20.II.2016, Jian-Yue Qiu & Hao Xu leg., reared by Lu Qiu from a nymph. Paratypes: CHINA: Yunnan: 1 male and 4 females ( SWU, in 100% alcohol), same data as the holotype, reared by Lu Qiu from the nymphs ; 1 male ( SWU), Mt. Jizushan, Binchuan County, Dali Prefecture , 2500 m, 16.V.1980 , Binchuan Group ; 7 females ( SWU, ex SNU), Mt. Jizushan, Binchuan County, Dali Prefecture , 2400 m, 14.VII.2010, Liang Tang leg. ; 2 males ( DLU), Mt. Ma’ershan [马耳山], Heqing County [鹤庆县], Dali Prefecture , 2400 m, 22.VI.2008 , no collector recorded.

Other material examined. 1 nymph and 3 oothecae (SWU, the nymph in 100 % alcohol), same data as the holotype, oothecae were obtained from the females.

Diagnosis. This species is similar to E. pilosa sp. nov., but differs from the latter by the following characters: 1) Male with body not long haired, while body long haired in E. pilosa ; 2) male with maculae on tegmina smaller, outer basal margins of tegmina not dark colored, while maculae larger, scattered, base of the Sc area dark brownish in E. pilosa ; 3) female black, while female brown in E. pilosa ; 4) ootheca with sharp and distinct serrations, while ootheca with reduced and small serrations in E. pilosa .

Description. Male. General: measurements (mm): body length: 12.2–18.4, overall length: 24.1–27.2, pronotum length×width: 4.1–4.6×6.9–7.6, tegmen length: 21.9–23.2. Small, brownish black, tegmina maculated ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 I–J). Head: black. Interocular space moderate, ocelli ridge curved. Frons flat, with two shallow dimples. Antennae black. Clypeus small, ante-clypeus yellowish white, post-clypeus black. Labrum small, blackish, apex white, maxillary palpi and labial palpi black (Fig. 15 B–C). Pronotum: brownish black, anterior marginated narrowly, white, thinner laterally. Surface generally with small blackish brown pubescence and anterior and lateral margins setose. Margins round, apex slightly convex and truncated, lateral margins round, hind margin softly arched outward (Fig. 15 A). Tegmina and w ings: Exceeded the end of abdomen about 8.9–11.1 mm. Tegmina hyaline, pale brownish yellow, sparsely and evenly covered with small brownish black spots. Wings hyaline, maculated, venation distinct. Legs: dark brownish black, pubescent, joint parts slightly yellowish; tibial spines dark reddish brown. Abdomen: brownish black, darker toward the apex, smooth. Supra-anal plate well pubescent, apex convex, median transparent widely, two median sclerites squared; cerci slender ( Fig. 33 A View FIGURE 33 ). Subgenital plate black, lateral margins darker, hind margin setose, median slightly concave; right stylus short, left one thin, relatively longer ( Fig. 33 B View FIGURE 33 ). Genitalia: well sclerotized. Left phallomere: L1 with round anterior part, left with a thin process, median necked; L2 curved roundly, right end with two distinct processes, wide apart, wrench-like; L3 gradually thinner toward apex, nearly straight, the hook curved rectangularly; pda and paa elongate; L8 small. Right phallomere: large. R1M enlarged posteriorly; R1L thin; R2 with three chunks ( Fig. 33 View FIGURE 33 C–D).

Female. Measurements (mm): body length: 17.4–19.3, body width: 10.6–12.2. Generally unicolored, dark brown to brownish black depending on specimen, pubescent; head brownish black, ocelli small, white, clypeus round, dark brown, ante-clypeus white, labrum with basal half and apex white, the rest dark brown; legs brownish black; abdomen in ventral view blackish, sometimes dim brownish maculated, median with a longitudinal white line; supra-anal plate protruded type, median emarginated, and with a longitudinal line; subgenital plate protruded, bulged, apex emarginated ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 K–L).

Nymph. Similar to the female, body light colored and dim maculated, abdomen slightly yellowish ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 44 E–F).

Ootheca. As Fig. 38 K and S View FIGURE 38 , reddish brown, serration of keel distinct, short, curved, apex sharp. The longitudinal ridges distinct.

Etymology. This species epithet is from the Latin words “ niger” and “ notum” meaning “black” and referring to “pronotum”, respectively, for its dark pronotum.

Natural History. Individuals living inside the earth under the leaves in the forest at Mt. Jizushan ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 44 A–B). After rearing, we successfully got oothecae and males for study; the female is small, but it can carry a large ootheca ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 44 C–G).

Distribution. China (Yunnan) ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ).
