Moribaetis salvini (Eaton 1885) View in CoL

( Figs 102–105 View FIGURES 102–105 )

Baetis salvini Eaton 1885: 170 , Pl. XVI: figs 29a (male imago); Kimmins 1960 (lectotype designation). Moribaetis salvini: Waltz & McCafferty 1985: 247 View in CoL , figs 42–44 (male imago, not larva); McCafferty & Lugo-Ortiz 1998: 120 (key to male imagoes).

Comments. Baetis salvini was originally described from Costa Rica as one male imago and one female subimago (Eaton 1885). Fore wing, hind wing and genitals of the male imago are accurately figured in the original description (Eaton 1885: pl. XVI: fig. 29a). Subsequently, this male imago was designated as the lectotype ( Kimmins 1960).

Eaton (1892) described one male imago, two female imagoes and one male subimago from various localities in Guatemala; he determined them as belonging to Baetis salvini , but noted their difference from the type specimen; Kimmins (1934) described and figured genitals of this male imago. Judging by greatly elongated 1st segment of gonostylus (wrongly called «second joint») ( Kimmins 1934: fig. 13), this specimen belongs to Moribaetis , but its exact systematic position should be verified.

Waltz & McCafferty (1985) reported the lectotype of salvini [ Baetis ] among material examined, but did not give additional description to this species; they only wrote that it was «Adequately characterized by Eaton (1885)», gave figures of wings redrawn from the original description and added a new drawing of its cercus ( Waltz & McCafferty 1985: fig. 42). Photos of this specimen, kindly done by Ben Price, demonstrate that its coloration of fore wing and coloration of fore femur ( Fig. 102 View FIGURES 102–105 ) are clearly different from that of M. maculipennis and M. latipennis sp. n.

Judging by the figure in the original description (Eaton 1885: fig. 29a), gonostyli of salvini [ Baetis ] have 1st segment longer than 2nd, and 3rd segment very short; this feature, as well as coloration of wings, allows to place this species to Moribaetis .
