Poa palustris Linnaeus View in CoL , Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 874. 1759.
["Habitat in Helvetiae, Italiae paludibus."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 99 (1762). RCN: 575.
Lectotype (Soreng in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 256. 2000): Herb. Linn. No. 87.21 ( LINN) .
Current name: Poa palustris L. View in CoL ( Poaceae ).
Note: Although Hitchcock (in Bot. Gaz. 38: 298. 1904) stated that the name was "founded on" the cited Morison plate (which he identified as Phalaris arundinacea L. ), this wording is not accepted as effecting a formal choice of type. Similarly, the comments of Kerguélen (in Lejeunia, n.s., 75: 242. 1975) are not accepted as a formal typification, for the reasons explained by Cafferty & al. (in Taxon 49: 240. 2000). The plate cited by Linnaeus is Morison’s s. 8, t. 6, f. 27, which not only conflicts somewhat with the diagnosis in having a dense rather than a diffuse panicle, but is also identified (by Soreng) as a species of Agrostis, possibly from Jamaica where Poa palustris does not occur. Linnaeus described his plant from central Europe. Sheet 87.21 (LINN), which corresponds with usage of the name, was therefore chosen as the lectotype by Soreng.
