TYPE LOCALITY: USA, San Francisco Mountains, New Mexico (fixed to Arizona, Yuma Co., 1 mi [1.6 km] SW Parker by Hoffmeister and Lee, 1967) .

DISTRIBUTION: SE California and S Nevada to S Arizona, New Mexico, and W Texas ( USA) to NE Baja California, Sonora, and Central Plateau to San Luis Potosi ( Mexico).

SYNONYMS: angustirostris Osgood, atrodorsalis Dalquest, eremicus Mearns, goldmani Townsend (not goldmani Osgood ), pricei J. A. Allen, seri Nelson, seorsus Goldman (not seorsus Burt), sobrinus Goldman, stephensi Merriam.

COMMENTS: Revised by Hoffmeister and Lee (1967). Chromosomal (Patton, 1969) and biochemical (J. L. Patton et al., 1981) data suggest that the Chihuahan Desert subspecies atrodorsalis and eremicus are a separate species. May include lineatus .
