( Fig. 1a–d View FIGURE 1 ; Fig. 2a–c View FIGURE 2 )
Pseudiastata brasiliensis Costa Lima, 1937: 179 View in CoL . Brazil. ST B IOC, “Serviço de Defesa Sanitária Vegetal”.
Material examined: Type material. Lectotype designation. We here designate as lectotype the male syntype: 2836/ Def. San. Veg. 3882/ Síntipo/ CEIOC 77010 . The other 14 syntypes, following the original description of Costa Lima (1937), are designated as paralectotypes. We analyzed nine specimens from the type series. The lectotype and eight paralectotypes are housed at the Coleção Entomológica do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The other six paralectotypes are housed at the Serviço de Defesa Sanitária Vegetal and were not examined.

Diagnosis. Numerous transverse markings through all cells (cells r 2+3 and r 4+5 almost all maculated, except near the edges; r-m=radial-medial crossvein, dm=discal medial cell, and dm-m=discal medial crossvein with some flaws but almost all maculated) ( Fig. 1b View FIGURE 1 ); in lateral view, epandrium partially lobate on its ventral apices.
Redescription. Head ( Fig. 1a–c View FIGURE 1 ): wider than thorax. Eye dark red, bare, and large. Antenna: scape light brown, pedicel light brown with setulae; first flagellomere light brown, wider and slightly longer than pedicel; arista micropubescent. Frons with numerous short interfrontal setulae, mostly brown, darker medially; ocellar triangle brown with two ocellar setae, and numerous setulae, arise from the ocellar triangle. Three subequal fronto-orbital seta: two reclinate and one proclinate, the proclinate slightly shorter than the reclinates. Inner vertical setae convergent and slightly smaller than outer vertical seta. Postocellar setae cruciate and about half length of inner vertical seta. Facial carina very narrow, confined to the dorsal portion of face; parafacial and gena light brown; vibrissa fine present, with a row subvibrissal setae. Proboscis: light brown, palpus light yellow with various setulae. Thorax ( Fig. 1d View FIGURE 1 ): mesonotum entirely dark yellow. Anterior and posterior dorsocentral setae similar in length. Acrostichal setulae not in rows; two prescutellar acrostichals of equal length; scutellum light yellow; apical scutellar seta present, and slightly longer than prescutellar acrostichals; one postpronotal seta and two ventral notopleural setae. Two katepisternal setae of unequal length. Anepisternum with several black marks around the periphery; proepisternal seta present. Legs: homogeneously pale yellow. Foreleg: femur slightly longer than tibia, lateral surface with a row of setulae. Midleg: femur and tibia approximately equal in length. Hind leg: femur longer than tibia. All tibia with a preapical dorsal seta, cuneiform setation present. Wing ( Fig. 1b View FIGURE 1 ): numerous transverse markings through all cells (cells r 2+3 and r 4+5 almost all maculated, except near the edges, r-m= radial–medial crossvein, dm=discal-medial cell, and dm-m= discal medial crossvein with some flaws but almost all maculate). Sc faint, incomplete. Costa ending at R 4+5, heavy marginal setation in basal 0.2–0.3 of third costal section (between R 2+3 and R 4+5). R 2+3 and R 4+5 parallel; R 4+5 ending at wing tip. Halter: light yellow. Abdomen: tergites I–II completely dark yellow and remaining tergites grey pruinescent. Male terminalia ( Fig. 2a–b View FIGURE 2 ): epandrial complex square, with an inverted U-shape, wider than long, almost entirely covered with microtrichia; surstylus fused to epandrium, with strong setae at apex; cercus broad, almost covering epandrium entirely. Phallus membranous, indistinguishable; postgonite narrow, pointed, margins almost touching at apex. Hypandrium partially Y-shaped; pregonites with two setae at apex.
Female. External morphology similar to male. Terminalia ( Fig. 2c View FIGURE 2 ): epiproct and hypoproct entirely covered with microtrichia; cercus long and covered with setae.
Remarks. The species is here redescribed to complement Costa Lima’s (1937) original description and Hardy’s (1959) subsequent description in his taxonomic revision. We added detailed photographs and an illustration of the female terminalia, as well as a standardization of the morphological terminology for the species of the genus. Additionally, with the study of the type material, we here designate a male deposited in the IOC collection as the lectotype ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) and the remaining 14 specimens of the type series (see Costa Lima 1937) as paralectotypes.
Geographic distribution in Brazil ( Table 2 View TABLE 2 ): Mato Grosso (new record), Mato Grosso do Sul (new record), Minas Gerais (new record), Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo (new record) .
