6. Ceratophya Wiedemann, 1824: 14 View in CoL View at ENA .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Ceratophya notata Wiedemann, 1824 ; Ceratophya longicornis Wiedemann, 1824 .
TYPE SPECIES: Ceratophya notata Wiedemann, 1824 , by subsequent designation (Blanchard in Audouin et al., 1846: pl. 175).
CURRENT STATUS: Valid subgenus of Microdon Meigen, 1803 [ teste Thompson et al. (1976: 59) ].
FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .
REMARKS: Thompson et al. (1976: 59) listed the type species as Ceratophya notata Wiedemann by subsequent designation of Coquillett (1910: 520), but this was later. Sabrosky (1999) made the change to the earlier Blanchard in Audouin et al. (1846) type species designation but listed Ceratophya as a junior synonym of Microdon Meigen, 1803 . Concerning its placement as a synonym, note # 1 in Sabrosky (1999: 79) reads “Authors disagree. Ceratophya is either a subgenus of Microdon or a distinct genus.” In their recent generic conspectus of microdontine flower flies ( Cheng & Thompson, 2008), Ceratophya is relegated to a “distinct subgroup” of Microdon without indicating if it is a species-group or subgenus. Due to the equivocal nature of its placement in that conspectus, we instead follow the latest clear placement of Ceratophya Wiedemann, 1824 as a subgenus of Microdon Meigen, 1803 in Thompson et al. (1976).
