45. Timia Wiedemann, 1824: 15 View in CoL View at ENA .
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Timia erythrocephala Pallas & Wiedemann, 1824 ; Timia apicalis Wiedemann, 1824 (as “ Dictyae apicalis ”).
TYPE SPECIES: Timia erythrocephala Pallas & Wiedemann, 1824 , by subsequent designation ( Steyskal, 1980: 577).
CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [ teste Steyskal (1980: 577) ].
FAMILY: ULIDIIDAE .
REMARKS: A few corrections need to be made with regard to previous treatments of this nominal genus in catalogs and revisionary works. 1. The authorship of Timia erythrocephala has been listed either as Pallas in Wiedemann (e.g., Zaitzev, 1984: 61; Galinskaya, 2011: 1) or Wiedemann alone (e.g., Loew, 1868: 9; Röder, 1889: 1886; Steyskal, 1980: 577). A recheck of the original description shows that Wiedemann gave two lines of characters in Latin attributed to Pallas and also listed his own characters. Thus, the authorship should be Pallas & Wiedemann in Wiedemann. 2. Both Zaitzev (1984: 61) and Galinskaya (2011: 1) listed the type species as Timia erythrocephala by monotypy, which is incorrect. The last paragraph for Timia mentions a second species of Timia that was found in the Hoffmannsegg collection under the name “ Dictyae apicalis ” and gave characters to differentiate it, and thus it is an available name. With two originally included species in Timia and no type designation in the original publication, a subsequent designation is required. 3. The earliest attempt we have found to fix the type species for Timia is in Loew (1868: 9). However, by stating “ Timia erythrocephala Wied. , auf welche die Gattung Timia begründet worden ist” [ Timia erythrocephala Wied. , upon which the genus Timia has been founded], Loew (1868: 9) is deemed here not to fulfill the requirement of ICZN Code Article 69.1.1 as an equivalent term of “ type ” for purposes of a type designation [see Evenhuis & Thompson (1990: 232) and Sabrosky (1999: 9) for explanations of the reasons for the exclusion of such equivocal statements]. Steyskal (1980: 577) listed Röder (1889: 186), who used a similar phraseology in fixing Timia erythrocephala as the type of Timia : “ Timia ist von Wiedemann in „ Analecta entomologica “ 1824 auf die Art Timia erythrocephala Wied. errichtet ...” [ Timia was erected by Wiedemann in „ Analecta entomologica “ 1824 for the species Timia erythrocephala Wied ....], which is therefore also an invalid designation. However, by being the first to use the term “ Type species”, Steyskal (1980: 577) is the earliest valid type-species designation for Timia Wiedemann, 1824 .
