REMARKS: Threneste Wiedemann, 1830 is not listed as an available name in any of the recent regional Diptera catalogs. It was originally proposed in synonymy with Penthetria japonica Wiedemann, 1830 and was thought not to have been validated before 1961. However, research conducted in this study has found that it was used as a valid taxon in Brauer (1883), and is thus made available by subsequent usage there. The type species ( Penthetria japonica Wiedemann, 1830 ) is currently treated in Penthetria Meigen, 1803 , and thus we here place Threneste as a junior synonym of Penthetria Meigen, 1803 , n. syn.
