A renewed service for authors

The main difficulty in generating an XML version of an article lies in cutting and extracting content as accurately as possible. The temptation to leave this responsibility to the authors can therefore be great for scientific publishers. Despite the associated constraints, the journals of the Muséum will not see their procedures of submission and publication radically changed, although necessary evolutions will inevitably take place. They will continue to take great care of the data entrusted to them so that the primary concern of the authors remains the original scientific results they wish to publish. And the expertise of the desk-editors, who have so far guaranteed a high quality of production for the institution’s publications, will now be directed at managing the conversion and distribution of the XML versions. Behind each journal, the skills of a professional desk-editor will remain at the service of its authors.

In the future as in the past, the members of the editorial team will take care of every step in an article’s publication process, paying particular attention to the following aspects:

– the registration of articles and nomenclatural acts on Zoobank, ensuring the uniformity of the data submitted to this portal; – the references cited in the article, by systematically crosschecking citations in the text against the bibliographic list, and by searching for missing DOIs;

– the coherence of the synonymic lists and, more generally, the taxonomic information contained in the article;

– the validity of the publication according to the relevant nomenclatural code for the discipline;

– the figures and supporting documents submitted with the article, thus using their technical skills to improve publication quality.

The transition to a digital and continuous publication workflow for the Muséum’s journals aims to increase the responsiveness and attractiveness of the journals. However, this cannot be done without technical staff who have received the relevant training to effectively adapt publication processes, as they have done during previous modernisations. The editorial team of the Muséum Science Press, especially the team dedicated to the journals since 1997 and beyond, have put their technical expertise at the service of scientists and their work, and will continue to do so with dedication in the years to come.

Ils continueront à l’avenir, comme ils l’ont fait jusqu’ici, de prendre en charge toutes les étapes qui leur incombent dans la publication d’un article. Ainsi, les membres de l’équipe des périodiques du Muséum porteront toujours un soin particulier: – À la saisie des articles et nouveautés nomenclaturales sur Zoobank, garantissant ainsi l’uniformité des données soumises à ce portail;

– aux références citées dans l’article, en vérifiant systématiquement l’adéquation entre les appels du texte et la liste bibliographique, et en recherchant les DOI manquants; – à la cohérence des listes synonymiques et, plus généralement, des informations taxonomiques contenues dans l’article;

– à la validité de la publication aux yeux du code de nomenclature en vigueur dans la discipline concernée;

– aux figures et documents annexes soumis avec l’article, mettant ainsi leur expertise technique au service de la qualité de publication, comme cela a toujours été le cas dans les Publications scientifiques du Muséum.

Le passage au numérique et à un flux de parution continu des revues scientifiques du Muséum est conçu pour en améliorer la réactivité et l’attractivité. Cependant, cela ne pourra pas se faire sans les grandes capacités d’adaptation et de formation des personnels chargés de ces revues, tout comme les revues n’auraient pas pu traverser les deux dernières décennies si elles n’avaient pas eu des personnels dévoués pour s’occuper d’elles. Les membres des Publications scientifiques, et tout particulièrement les équipes qui ont fait vivre les périodiques depuis 1997 et au-delà, ont mis leur expertise technique au service des scientifiques et de leurs travaux et continueront de le faire avec autant de dévouement dans les années qui viennent.
