Range: — Phlegmariurus reflexus View in CoL is widespread throughout the Neotropics, and occurs from southern Mexico south to Bolivia (BE, CH, CO, LP, SC) and Argentina.

Ecology: —Common; frequent pioneer on permanently moist, disturbed ground, e.g., road banks, but also in peat bogs, in humid to semideciduous forests; 500–3000 m, 300–3400 m elsewhere.

Notes: — Phlegmariurus reflexus is highly variable with respect to leaf and stem size, direction and crowding of leaves, and leaf margin characters. Part of the variation may reflect variable growth conditions, but very often several distinct forms may co-occur in the same habitat, indicating that genetic differences exist. The variation patterns are complex and in need of a detailed study.

A small form was recognized earlier as var. minor , but appears to intergrade with the remaining species complex, and therefore is abandoned at this point.

Phlegmariurus pearcei View in CoL was included as a separate species in Øllgaard & Gonzales (2014: 126) but is included in P. reflexus View in CoL here.
