Type species. Ceratonereis mirabilis Kinberg, 1865 View in CoL , by subsequent designation ( Hartman 1948).

Diagnosis for atoke specimens (emended from Bakken & Wilson 2005, new features highlighted in boldface). Prostomium with anterior margin deeply incised. Two antennae subulate or lanceolate, two palps with cylindrical palps and rounded or pyriform palpostyles, four eyes, four pairs of anterior cirri with cirrostyles long and slender, present. Maxillary ring with conical paragnaths in areas II–IV, area I with or without paragnaths. Oral ring with papillae on areas VI, areas V and VII–VIII bare; areas VI-V-VI λ-shaped. Paired oesophageal caeca absent. Dorsal cirri with cirrophores and cirrostyles distinct. Dorsal ligules strongly reduced or absent in posterior chaetigers.
