Distribution: —To date, this species is only known from the state of Rio de Janeiro. The few specimens of D. gaudichaudiana studied confirm its restricted distribution.

Habitat:—Dense Ombrophilous Montane Forest.

Notes:—Kunth (1849) described D. gaudichaudiana from a collection made by Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré (1789– 1854). The specimen at P (P 06233115) was designated as the lectotype because the label has the date 1831–1833, which is the time when Gaudichaud was in Brazil (1832–1833) ( Urban 1906). D. gaudichaudiana is similar to D. thyrsiflora in the erect, non-branching habit, spirally arranged leaves and six stamens. Based on the lectotype, distinctive features of D. gaudichaudiana are the leaves congested at the apex of the stem (versus distributed evenly along the stem in D. thyrsiflora ) and the lanose indument on the abaxial leaf surface that is more prominent and dense near the margin (versus leaf surface glabrous on both sides in D. thyrsiflora ).

D. discrepans was described by Hasskarl based on the collection Gaudichaud 343bis and, apparently, Hasskarl only analyzed the material deposited at G. In addition, in the protologue, Hasskarl cites the species as “ D.? discrepans Hsskl. ,” which suggests the author was not sure if the species belonged to Dichorisandra . He also cites the date “1834” with “343 bis in hrb. De Candolle.” The material deposited at G (G 00489485) is dated “1834” and has the annotation “ Dichorisandra? discrepans , ” which confirms this material was studied by Hasskarl. Material of D. gaudichaudiana at L (L 1441183) with the same information as the material at G (“ D.? discrepans Hsskl. ”) was also found. However, this material only comprises fragments of a plant that could not be identified by the authors and in the present work it is not considered as isolectotype.
